What is an Endocrinologist?
An endocrinologist is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of hormone-related diseases and conditions. They work to ensure that the different systems in the body communicate well with each other by correcting hormonal imbalances. They perform a series of tests to understand the problem, determine the best treatment and help patients with lifestyle changes (when possible) that can improve the medical condition.
Reasons to see an Endocrinologist
Typically, you’ll see an endocrinologist in an outpatient setting after being referred by your primary care doctor. However, an endocrinologist could be called in to consult during an inpatient visit if there are concerns about an underlying hormone-related disorder.
Patients see endocrinologists for reasons ranging from diabetes management to problems with their thyroid, certain types of cancer, adrenal disorders, and more.
